Three Bon Secours Richmond Hospitals Earn "A" in Patient Safety by Hospital Safety Grade

Bon Secours Richmond Health System announced earlier this month that Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center in Mechanicsville, Va., Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center in Midlothian, Va., and Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond, Va. were recognized with an “A” Hospital Safety Grade, a standard measure of patient safety, by The Leapfrog Group. These facilities were among only 32 percent of hospitals nationwide to receive the “A” grade.

The Leapfrog Group is a nonprofit organization committed to driving quality, safety, and transparency in the U.S. health care system. Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades of A, B, C, D and F are assigned to more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals across the nation twice annually, once in the fall and once in the spring. The grade represents a hospital’s overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors. The Safety Grade includes 27 measures, all currently in use by national measurement and reporting programs.

“Patient safety has always been and will always be a top priority for us,” said John McCurley, M.D., chief medical officer of Bon Secours Richmond Health System. “Our hospitals are a trusted part of the greater Richmond community and we pledge to honor the trust of our patients by being transparent about our progress and working toward the highest possible standard of safety.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is calculated by top patient safety experts, is peer-reviewed and fully transparent and free to the public. To see Bon Secours Richmond’s detailed scores, as well as individual hospital grades and state rankings, visit the Hospital Safety Grade website at
